BEFORE YOUR GRADUATE LEAVES HOME, THERE'S ONE THING MOST PARENTS FORGET
Mundy Legal Services Encourages Families to Prepare Essential Legal Documents Before Students Head to College, Trade School, or Military Service
Tomball, Texas — July 8, 2026 — Every summer, parents prepare their graduates for the next chapter by shopping for dorm essentials, scheduling move-in days, and helping them take their first steps into adulthood.
What many families don't realize is that once their child turns 18, they become a legal adult.
That means parents may no longer have the legal authority to access medical information or make healthcare decisions on their behalf during an emergency, even if they are paying tuition, providing health insurance, or helping support them financially.
"As parents, we spend months making sure our children have everything they need before they leave home," said Allison Mundy, founder and attorney at Mundy Legal Services. "But one of the most important things they can take with them isn't something you'll find on a dorm shopping list. It's making sure the right legal documents are in place before an emergency happens."
Medical Power of Attorney and Power of Attorney documents allow young adults to designate someone they trust to make decisions or assist with certain matters should they become unable to do so themselves.
While these documents are often associated with older adults, attorneys say they are just as important for young adults beginning college, military service, trade school, or entering the workforce.
To encourage families to have these conversations before the school year begins, Mundy Legal Services is offering a Back-to-School Special that includes both a Medical Power of Attorney and a Power of Attorney for $150, a savings of $100 from the regular price.
The firm hopes the special serves as an opportunity for parents to think beyond dorm shopping and help prepare their young adults for life's unexpected moments.
Appointments are now available through the start of the fall semester.
