On September 19, 2010 at 2 pm, the Texas Historical Commission and the Salem Archives and Historical Research Center of Rosehill dedicates its historic cemetery and wildflower sanctuary. The official Texas state historical marker unveiled that day dates prior to the Civil War.
Founding families and families of the interred at Salem Historical Cemetery are invited to attend this dedication. A small reception follows the dedication at Salem Community Center Atrium.
The first burials here were of S. Helene Scherer (d. 1858) and her brother, Reinhardt Johann Scherer (d. 1860). The first non-family member buried here was Eva Achenbach Theiss (d. 1861). In 1864, three men who died in the Spring Creek Powder Mill explosion were interred here. In 1869, George Scherer transferred property including the cemetery to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church; it changed names at this time (to the present Salem Lutheran Church of Rosehill). Those buried here include veterans of military conflicts dating to the Civil War. Others interred include many of the early Rosehill residents and other individuals who attended the church but lived in nearby communities such as Cypress top, Decker Prairie and Willow Creek. Cemetery features include vertical stones, obelisks, interior fencing, grave slabs, statuary and German-language markers. Set among trees and vegetation, Salem Lutheran Historical Cemetery remains active while continuing to serve as a record of the area?s early settlers.
The dedication is located at Salem Historical Cemetery and Wildflower Sanctuary, 23555 1/2 Lutheran Cemetery Rd., Tomball, Texas 77377. Please RSVP to this occasion by contacting Salem Lutheran Church of Rosehill at 281.351.8223 or archives@salem4u.com
