SUMMARY:Registration for Discovery College summer youth camp at LSC
DESCRIPTION:Lone Star College to hold STEM-focused\, college prep summer camps\nHOUSTON (March 22\, 2012) Lone Star College System's popular Discovery College summer youth camp is quickly approaching to help parents turn the long\, lazy days of summer into a learning opportunity for their children.\n\n \n\nRegistration will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on April 14 at most Lone Star College campuses. \n\n \n\nWeek-long camps for children ages 6 through 18 will be held from Monday\, June 4 through Friday\, Aug. 2. Tuition starts at $89 per weekly camp. Specific program offerings will vary by age group and by campus.\n\n \n\nDiscovery College summer youth camps offer a variety of fun and educational summer camp programs that will give children an unique opportunity to be introduced to the "college experience" while developing skills and learning new ones in a relaxed\, creative and friendly environment.\n\n \n\nThe programs are STEM-focused\, meaning they are specifically designed to engage your child in key areas like science\, technology\, engineering and math (STEM) to promote a true learning experience with a solid foundation. Highly-qualified instructors will create a fun environment for students while preventing the learning loss that can accompany the summer months.\n\n \n\nNew this year is "Lone Star College Road Trip\," a session specially designed to prepare middle and high school students for life beyond high school graduation. Sessions will include:\n\n \n\n\n	\n SAT/ACT preparation\, focusing on practice questions\, essays and computational math\;\n	\n Career exploration\, where students will explore different occupations through interactive presentations by guest lecturers and Lone Star College faculty\;\n	\n An intensive writing session that will prepare students to write compelling essays and short stories for their college admission applications\;\n	\n A technology-intensive workshop where students will receive hands-on training to use high-level computer applications for digital imaging\, video editing\, game design and web application creation\; and\n	\n Dormitory survival skills\, a real-world "boot camp" that will teach students about basic sewing techniques\, laundry\, campus navigation\, self-advocacy\, and handling money and credit cards.\n\n \n\n"What differentiates Discovery College from other camps is that we strive to promote academic\, social and emotional learning in all of our sessions\," said Robin Garrett\, dean of continuing education for LSCS. "This holistic approach is what makes learning fun and get students excited about what Lone Star College and a college education can offer them in the future."\n\n \n\nFor more specific information on sessions offered at each Lone Star College campus\, go to LoneStar.edu/DiscoveryCollege.\n\n\n	With 75\,000 students in credit classes\, and a total enrollment of more than 90\,000\, Lone Star College System is the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area\, and the fastest-growing community college system in Texas.
